Walk outside towards the forest. There is a path that leads up the hill to the fire road next to the train tracks. Stay off tracks as it is very active. Make a right and walk about a quarter mile to locally famous “Split Rock” - a site to see overlooking many small lakes.
You can also make a sharp right before the fire road and go to the other side of the lake. Lots of small to large boulders to practice rock climbing on.
DONNER LAKE
There are a couple beach areas available on Donner. There are also many public piers. You can bike there in about 15 minutes via donner pass road. Or you can drive and park on street, inside Donner Memorial State park, or in parking lot at West End.
West End Beach has some non-motor boats and paddle board rentals available. West End is largest beach, pay to get in, socially distanced markers, On some major holidays (july 4th) requires proof of Truckee residency.
